(Austria). All errors and omissions are the responsibility of the present authors alone. 2 Abstract In this paper, we investigate the links between risk attitudes, risk-reducing behaviour and stated preferences for changes in risk. This is done in the context of an empirical study of " countermeasures " against radioactive contamination of land following nuclear accidents such as Chernobyl. Countermeasures can reduce contamination levels in food crops to " safe " levels, but consumers may require large price reductions before they will consume treated products. How large these reductions would have to be for countermeasures to be effective in terms of consumer attitudes was the focus of a contingent valuation study carried out in Scotland and Norway. Data from this survey allows us to examine whether attitudes to risk or past risk-reducing behaviour are more important in predicting willingness to pay to avoid increases in perceived risk. We also report on which sources of information on food safety are most trusted by consumers.

Factors associated with the risk perception and purchase decisions of Fukushima-related food in South Korea

Following the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, the risk level perceived by Koreans on the radioactive contamination of Japanese food that is being distributed in Korea remains high. Many of these perceptions are based on subjective risk perception rather than an objective measure with scientific evidence, which makes communicating risks more difficult; therefore, it is critical to unders...

Risk assessment of radioisotope contamination for aquatic living resources in and around Japan.

Food contamination caused by radioisotopes released from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant is of great public concern. The contamination risk for food items should be estimated depending on the characteristics and geographic environments of each item. However, evaluating current and future risk for food items is generally difficult because of small sample sizes, high detection limits, ...

Current Measures on Radioactive Contamination in Japan: A Policy Situation Analysis

BACKGROUND The Great East Japan Earthquake on 11th March 2011 and the subsequent Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant disaster caused radioactive contamination in the surrounding environment. In the immediate aftermath of the accident the Government of Japan placed strict measures on radio-contamination of food, and enhanced radio-contamination monitoring activities. Japan is a pilot country ...

Development of RadRob15, A Robot for Detecting Radioactive Contamination in Nuclear Medicine Departments

Accidental or intentional release of radioactive materials into the living or working environment may cause radioactive contamination. In nuclear medicine departments, radioactive contamination is usually due to radionuclides which emit high energy gamma photons and particles. These radionuclides have a broad range of energies and penetration capabilities. Rapid detection of radioactive contami...

Data for Disaster Planning: Risk Factors for Internal Radiation Exposures after Fukushima

Factors determining how much radioactive material people take into their bodies after a major nuclear disaster have not been well defined. In this issue of EHP researchers from the University of Tokyo identify risk factors for contamination among residents near the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant accident. They conclude that with the right precautions people might be able to live continu...
